The Karakoram Highway  or the China-Pakistan Friendship Highway) is a 1,300-kilometre (810 mi) national highway which extends from Hasan Abdal in the Punjab province of Pakistan to the Khunjerab Pass in Gilgit-Baltistan, where it crosses into China and becomes China National Highway 314. The highway connects the Pakistani provinces of Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Gilgit-Baltistan with China's Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region. The highway is a popular tourist attraction, and is one of the highest paved roads in the world, passing through the Karakoram mountain range, at 36°51′00″N 75°25′40″E at maximum elevation of 4,714 metres (15,466 ft) near Khunjerab pass.[Due to its high elevation and the difficult conditions in which it was constructed, it is often referred to as the Eighth Wonder of the World. The highway is also a part of the Asian Highway AH4.










The Karakoram Highway, also known as the Friendship Highway in China, was built by the governments of Pakistan and China. It was started in 1959 and was completed and opened to the public in 1979. Pakistan initially favored routing through Mintaka Pass. In 1966, China citing the fact that Mintaka would be more susceptible to air strikes recommended the steeper Khunjerab Pass instead.About 810 Pakistanis and about 200 Chinese workers lost their lives, mostly in landslides and falls, while building the highway. Over 140 Chinese workers who died during the construction are buried in the Chinese cemetery in Gilgit. The route of the KKH traces one of the many paths of the ancient Silk Road.

Karakoram Highway reconstruction
As part of the $46 billion China Pakistan Economic Corridor, reconstruction and upgrade works on the Pakistani portion of the Karakoram Highway (KKH) are underway. The KKH spans the 806-kilometre (501 mi) long distance between the China-Pakistan border and the town of Hasan Abdal. At Burhan Interchange near Hasan Abdal, the existing M1 motorway will intersect the Karakoram Highway. From there, access onwards to Islamabad and Lahore continues as part of the existing M1 and M2 motorways, while Hasan Abdal will also be at intersection of the Eastern Alignment, and the Western Alignment which will lead towards the port city of Gwadar.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday rebutted reports claiming that the caste-based reservations would end and clarified that reservation was here to stay.

In an exclusive interview to ANI, Prime Minister Modi spoke of the Constitution, Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar's dreams and he took it upon himself to fulfil these.


"The objectives of our Constitution and dreams of Dr. Babasaheb are still incomplete. It is the responsibility of every one of us to fulfill his dream and reservations are an important tool to achieve this," Prime Minister Modi said.

Making it clear, the Prime Minister said, "Reservation is here to stay. Let there be no doubts about this."

Stating that the dreams of Babasaheb were the strength of the nation, Prime Minister Modi said that his government was commit

"The dreams of Babasaheb are the strength of this nation and we are committed to fulfilling them. Our Mantra is Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas and to achieve this, it is most important to protect the rights of the poor, marginalized, downtrodden, Dalits, Tribals and OBCs," the Prime Minister told ANI.

The Prime Minister attacked those with "vested interests" and said those who are constantly spreading canards on the issue of reservation and are politicising it, are the same people who have always crushed Babasaheb's dreams.

"Before any crucial election, there are vested interest groups who will raise a bogey that Bharatiya Janata Party will abolish reservations and sections of the media will amplify this," he said.

"They are trying to sow seeds of doubt and mistrust among the weaker sections of society. But, the people of India are wise and they will not believe this propaganda. Look across the length and breadth of India, maximum MPs and MLAs from SC, ST and OBC communities are from BJP," he added.

Govt nod for increasing 5,000 additional seats in Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas

Union HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar on Monday approved an increase of 5,000 seats at Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas across the country.

In the last four years there has been an addition of 9,000 seats in the residential schools for talented rural children.

With the Human Resource Development (HRD) Ministry approving the addition of 5,000 more seats, the number of seats has increased from 46,600 to 51,000 at the Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas (JNVs) .

The admission to the additional seats will start in the 2019-20 academic session.

This is a step in the right direction. This is the biggest-ever expansion of quality education for rural students. This unprecedented expansion of JNVs, nearly free of cost residential schools, will provide more opportunity for talented children from rural areas to get quality education,” Javadekar said.

Navodaya schools are the only institutions in the country where students give entrance examination for admission to Class 6.

In 2001, 5.50 lakh aspirants appeared for the entrance examination for Class 6. Over the years the number of aspirants appearing for the test has increased considerably.

For the 2019 entrance test, 31.10 lakh students have registered for the entrance examination.
